While many are keen to keep fit and healthy, it’s hard to go the gym or for jogging everyday or even thrice a week.
Amy Selbach, a fitness trainer at Taut Body Studio, says even exercise fanatics get tired of work-outs. But this is why.

1. Impatience:
“Most people stop doing exercises because they give themselves a short time to see results and if they don’t, they give up. You can only start to see results once you are consistent with whatever exercises that you are doing,” she says.
2. Wrong timing:
People do not appreciate their bodies and personalities and often embark on popular work-outs and routines rather than finding one that suits them.
“Exercise should be something that is individual; whatever routine that might work out on me would not necessarily suit another person, everyone should find a formula that best fits,” she says.
While many people go to the gym early in the morning before they head to the office, Ms Selbach says that one should schedule work-out time realistically; when one you are most active and alert.
“If you are not a morning person and set out to do exercises at 5am, it is hard that you will get out of bed and soon you will find yourself missing more and more gym sessions. Make time to have a walk at lunch hour instead or exercise in the evenings,” she says.
3. Do what you enjoy:
Also choose an activity or a form of exercise that you enjoy; you will be more committed to what you love doing. Instead of lifting weights and running on the treadmill, if you love music and dancing, opt for Zumba classes. If you love water, go swimming or do aqua aerobics.
4. Break the monotony:
Mix-up the exercises. If you always go through the same exercises for warm up or for your routine, consider mixing things up or trying something new altogether. “When you have been going to the gym or engaging in some form of exercise consistently and then you stop, this can affect your metabolism and reverse the improvements you have made in weight loss,” she says.
5. Join a training group:
This will ensure that you stay committed to the routine. The group makes you more accountable and the exercises become less of a chore and more of a fun activity in crowds.
“Group fitness also have the advantage of motivation when your peers start seeing results of your hard work and which in turn will make you more committed to the work-out plans.
In my experience I have seen people who stay longer in fitness under this category,” says Ms Selbach though she is quick to note that there are individuals who have tried unsuccessfully to work out in groups, but excelled with a personal fitness trainer.
6. Listen to music during a group or solo fitness session.:
This helps not only to lift your moods but also make the routines more enjoyable.
7. Keep a fitness journal:
It is no longer a matter of pen and paper; there are several applications that one can easily download that will not only remind you to exercise, but also calculate the calories you have burned during a particular workout.
8. Change the ambience:
If your workout space no longer provides you with the right inspiration, it’s time to spruce it up by adding some colour to the walls especially if this is your own personal space.
Changing the environment like choosing to do yoga outdoors like your backyard while you enjoy the sunshine instead of your living room.
9. Change the shoes, gym clothes:
The problem could be your sports gear; if it is too restrictive or uncomfortable for whatever reason it can serve as a distraction. Find the right shoes and attire or spot new gym clothes can help bring back the fire to exercise
