The Ebola virus disease (EVD) was identified in 1976. There were two simultaneous outbreaks, one in Nzara, Sudan, and the other in Yambuku, Democratic Republic of Congo. Then latter occurred in a village near the Ebola River, from where the disease is named.
The recent outbreak of Ebola in West Africa is the largest outbreak which has at least 9,216 suspected cases and 4,555 confirmed deaths (2013-2014). The most affected countries are Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.
The Ebola Virus


There are five types of virus in the genus Ebolavirus group. Ebola Virus is one of them. Others are Bundibugyo ebolavirus, Reston ebolavirus, Sudan ebolavirus and Taï Forest ebolavirus. This virus causes The Ebola virus disease (EVD), known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is a severe, often fatal illness in humans other mammals. This virus is transmitted from wild animals (fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family) and spreads to human population through human to human close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected animals such as chimpanzees, gorillas, monkeys, fruit bats, forest antelope and porcupines found ill or dead or in the rainforest.
